Azerbaijan GP, Baku: Live ticker, weather – is the wind just a lazy excuse?

Baku is the city of winds, and indeed we have time and again found the wind whistling past our ears in the Azerbaijani capital.

Some drivers have noted that – just like at Silverstone or Austin – they are repeatedly taken by surprise by gusts of wind. This gives us pause for thought. After all, the Grand Prix circuits in England and Texas are on open terrain, whereas the Baku circuit winds its way through the city. So is it all just a lame excuse?

First of all: Formula 1 is expecting pleasant, warm weather in Baku, with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees. There will be passing clouds, but there is no rain in sight.

As for the wind, it’s certainly to be expected at certain points on the circuit (such as the long stretch back to the start and finish); not the entire section of the circuit is sheltered from the wind by buildings. And that can make for gusty and unpleasant conditions.

Furthermore, at this time of year, the sometimes strong wind blows lots of leaves onto the track, which can quickly block the cooling vents.
