Alonso: “The standard is incredibly high this year – nobody’s making any mistakes!”

After finishing ninth at Misano, Moto2 star David Alonso was out to make amends at Spielberg. Starting from sixth on the grid, the Aspar rider was in a decent position for Sunday’s Moto2 race. Alonso got off to a good start, which allowed him to close the gap on the front-runners in the opening laps. He held fourth place for a long time. On lap 15, he overtook Ivan Ortola after the chicane and held on to third place from then on. However, Izan Guevara and Filip Salac were out of reach. Alonso crossed the finish line 1.2 seconds behind Salac and 1.3 seconds ahead of championship leader Manuel Gonzalez (Intact GP).

“I got off to a good start and managed to settle into a good position. I still need to improve a little in the opening laps, because when all the riders are bunched up, I find it difficult to get my bearings when braking,” noted the Colombian. “In Turn 6, I went too wide and lost a few places; I’ll be working on that for the next races. On the second or third lap, I nearly crashed, just like last year. Fortunately, I managed to stay on the bike. After that, the race went very well, with a very good pace.”

Alonso: Fourth in the overall standings

Alonso secured his fourth podium of the season at the Red Bull Ring. The 20-year-old emphasised just how competitive the middle class of the 2026 Motorcycle World Championship is. “The standard in Moto2 is incredibly high this year. Nobody makes mistakes,” said Alonso. “On Sunday, you had to plan and calculate very carefully, but for me it felt too short. It was a mental challenge knowing how to stay on the limit. These races allow us to learn a lot and continue to build a solid foundation.”

David Alonso now occupies fourth place in the overall standings. He is currently 13.5 points behind Ivan Ortola, who is currently third. He trails championship leader Manuel Gonzalez by 90.5 points.
