2027 Formula 1 calendar finalised! Record number of sprints, change for Monaco

The new Formula 1 calendar for the 2027 season is finally here! There has been much discussion about it, and there was much speculation for a long time due to the global situation – but now it’s official.

2027: Races in Portimão and Istanbul

What was already known and has now been officially confirmed: there will once again be 24 races, with Portimão and Istanbul returning to the calendar (Istanbul still has an asterisk, as the circuit has yet to be given the final green light by the FIA). Barcelona and Zandvoort are out; the Spanish Grand Prix will once again take place at the Madrid circuit, as it did this year.

Ten sprints, including one in Monaco

A total of ten (!) sprints will take place in 2027, mainly at the start and end of the season. The sprint weekends are: Bahrain, Melbourne, Suzuka, Montreal, Monaco, Silverstone, Monza, Interlagos, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. This means Bahrain, Melbourne, Suzuka, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will host sprint races for the first time. So there’ll also be a sprint weekend at the historic circuit in the Principality! And more sprints than ever before: previously, there were either three (2021 and 2022) or six (2023–2026) per season.

Apart from the race in Las Vegas, which takes place on Saturday local time but is held early on Sunday morning here in Europe, all the GPs are once again on a Sunday. This year, as a one-off, the Azerbaijan weekend is taking place a day earlier, with the GP already on Saturday. The reason for this is a public holiday in the country.

Three triple-headers

In total, there are three triple-headers – that is, three races in a row: Australia/Japan/China, Azerbaijan/Turkey/Singapore and the USA (Austin)/Mexico/Brazil. In addition, there are five double-headers, including the season opener and finale, both in the Middle East, and three intra-European double-headers (Silverstone/Spielberg, Spa/Budapest and Monza/Madrid).

2027 season opener in the Middle East

What is striking is that, despite the difficult situation in the Middle East, plans are currently in place for the season to open in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, with winter testing in Bahrain. Bahrain is once again the opening race. However, the Middle Eastern Grands Prix are currently causing headaches for everyone involved, even for the 2026 calendar. Due to the situation in the region, it currently looks as though the races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will be cancelled this year (with a finale in Imola, according to our information). Nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

This year, the first Middle East block featuring Bahrain and Jeddah was scheduled for April (and then cancelled due to the war with Iran), whilst the season opener took place in Melbourne. This was due to the fasting month of Ramadan, which fell in February and March this year. In 2027, Ramadan will be earlier – from February to early March – and will therefore not stand in the way of a season opener in Bahrain. Consequently, the Asia-Oceania races in 2027 will take place earlier than this year; Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will be held earlier. The Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring will also take place just under two weeks later than usual. As was the case this year, the European block will run as a single block; Montreal will take place after Miami. This is intended to reduce emissions from logistics.
