Formula 2 unveils revised standard car

FIA Formula 2 unveiled its new race car for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 FIA F2 seasons at a special launch event in the Formula 1 paddock at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

Building on the success of the current generation, the F2 car for the coming years represents a significant evolution, aimed at further strengthening the championship’s role as the final step on the path to Formula 1.

For cost reasons, the car retains the 2026 Dallara chassis but features redesigned front and rear wings. The improved aerodynamic characteristics enable closer racing and enhance the drivers’ ability to stay close to the car in front, whilst the design aligns more closely with the current F1 design philosophy.

The car is powered by the tried-and-tested 3.4-litre Mecachrome turbo engine, which continues to run on Aramco’s advanced, sustainable fuel, first successfully introduced in the series in 2025. Pirelli, the exclusive tyre supplier to F2 since 2017, will continue to supply tyres developed specifically for the championship.

One of the most significant technical developments for the 2027 generation is the introduction of an on-board starter system. To integrate this function, Hewland has developed an evolution of the current gearbox that allows for the installation of the on-board starter system.

The 2027 F2 car retains the 2024 FIA specifications regarding braking performance, steering effort and cockpit ergonomics, ensuring that the car remains accessible to a wide range of drivers. Marelli’s electronic and hydraulic systems package also remains unchanged, including the EM Motorsport marshalling system.

Bruno Michel, CEO of the FIA Formula 2 Championship, said: “In developing this new car, our primary objective was to ensure that it remains the perfect tool for preparing drivers for Formula 1. Together with the FIA, we have opted for the current chassis and focused on redesigning the front and rear wings. This allows us to keep costs under control whilst bringing the design closer to the look of a Formula 1 car and, at the same time, improving the F2 car’s ability to deliver exciting races. We have added an in-car starter, which simplifies operations for the teams and enables drivers to restart their car on the track following a spin or an engine stall. We are also continuing our collaboration with our partners Aramco and Pirelli in the areas of driver development, sustainability and delivering a great show for the fans. Our fans expect F2 races to be highly entertaining and safe, and that is exactly what this new car will deliver.”

The new F2 car for 2027 fully complies with the latest FIA safety standards, continuing F2’s commitment to ensuring the highest level of driver protection whilst preparing young talent for the demands of Formula 1.

The 2027 car made its debut last June at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and has since undergone an intensive development programme in collaboration with Dallara, which included wind tunnel and aerodynamic testing, amongst other things.

The first car will be delivered to the teams in December 2026, with the second car to follow in January 2027.
