Winkler puts painful Schleiz memories behind him with a one-two finish

For WSC rider Micky Winkler (24), his guest appearance at the 91st International Schleizer Dreieck Race was far more than just an extra race outside the Euro Moto series. Following a disappointing weekend at the second Euro Moto Sportbike event in Brno, Czech Republic, the main focus on his home track – and his favourite circuit – was on regaining his former form.

However, this was by no means a foregone conclusion: it was only last year that Winkler was injured at the Schleizer Dreieck, which meant an early end to his season. His motivation to make a positive statement this time around was correspondingly high.

These two wins have, of course, given me a real boost again.

And that is exactly what the Schleiz native achieved in impressive fashion. Winkler confidently secured pole position in qualifying. In both races of the German Twin Trophy, he then left nothing to chance, leading unchallenged from start to finish in each race and also setting the fastest lap in both heats. The race weekend could hardly have gone better for the rider and the team. Unlike last year, consistently dry weather also ensured stable and predictable conditions on the track.

“These two victories have, of course, given me a real boost again after the Brno weekend,” explained Winkler after the races, having received a hefty penalty at the Euro Moto for a mistake with the Mepolett. WSC team boss Roland Matthes also drew a positive conclusion: “Not only were we able to capitalise on the weekend with two wins, but we also managed to test a few important things on the chassis. That gives us additional insights for the challenges ahead.”

Following their successful performance at Schleiz, the rider and team are now looking forward with optimism to the third Euro Moto event of the season. From 26 to 28 June, the action moves to Most, where Winkler hopes to carry the momentum from his home race.
