Work is underway at the Schleizer Dreieck to shape the future – with a focus on sidecars

Those in charge at the Schleizer Dreieck are doing everything they can to ensure the circuit does not disappear from the international motorsport map in future. The prospects look good for the Sidecar World Championship.

This season, for the first time, the historic race track around the Schleizer Dreieck had to manage without the IDM, which now runs under the name Euro Moto. Nevertheless, the team is going ahead with its racing summer in Thuringia. “It’s no secret that we want to be on the Sidecar World Championship calendar in 2027,” MSC chairman Jörg Langer told the Thüringische Landeszeitung. “The sidecar elite were already based in Thuringia between 2005 and 2013 – with the minor exception of 2008. The signs for this aren’t looking too bad at all.”

Euro Moto had put its collaboration with the Schleiz organisers on hold, as the governing body, the FIM, no longer includes road races in the international calendar. Furthermore, foreign federations – including Italy, amongst others – have for some time now been refusing to provide their riders with the insurance cover included in their rider’s licence. To compete in Schleiz, riders from abroad would have to purchase an additional race card. DMSB riders would still be insured if they competed in Schleiz. The plans for the return of the Sidecar World Championship to Schleiz next year are looking quite promising. The FIM’s list of measures has been provided to the Schleiz organisers and is being diligently worked through.

Euro Moto remains an issue

A large proportion of the measures imposed, such as extending the gravel trap or repositioning tyre stacks, have already been completed as a priority by members of the organising club, MSC. “We have to deliver now,” urges Jörg Langer in an article in the Thüringische Landeszeitung. “The tasks that still need to be tackled at the moment include, on the one hand, the installation of concrete elements at the entrance to the town and the purchase of so-called air fences. Both are currently in progress. We have received the relevant quotations. We would like to organise this jointly with all the event organisers active at the Schlei¬zer Drei¬eck.”

Politicians, too, are aware of the racetrack’s appeal. During previous years’ IDM events, tens of thousands of fans flocked to the track on each of the three days of the event. This is an economic factor that cannot be ignored. The town therefore also intends to make a financial commitment.

The former IDM, now Euro Moto, also remains a talking point in Schleiz.
