Chaz Davies brought his racing career to a close at the end of 2021 as one of the most successful Superbike riders of his generation. The Welshman is now passing on his experience to riders such as Senna Agius. The three-time Superbike World Championship runner-up manages the Australian’s career whilst also acting as his mentor.

However, the connection between Agius and Davies goes back much further. The two met in their adopted home of Andorra. “Chaz has been a sort of mentor to me for a long time. Officially, he’s been managing my career for about a year and a half now. But even before that, our relationship was characterised by this mentoring role,” Agius explained in an exclusive interview with SPEEDWEEK.com.

First just training partners, later a formidable team

Training together laid the foundations for their collaboration. For the young Australian, it was only natural to draw on the experience of the long-serving World Superbike rider. “We were constantly training together and – well – it’s Chaz Davies, after all. As a young rider, I naturally asked him countless questions, and I still do that today.”

Davies, in turn, recognised the potential of his current protégé early on. “I think he saw that I had talent and a keen interest in improving. That’s why he always gave me very good advice. I’m really grateful to him for that,” emphasised Agius.

For around a year and a half now, Davies has also been officially responsible for managing the Moto2 rider. Agius does not see the fact that the 32-time Superbike World Championship race winner had no previous experience as a manager as a disadvantage.

“I think it works very well. He’s never been a manager before, but he’s a very clever person,” praised the Australian. Above all, he said, the combination of the two roles is valuable: “What’s more, he can also help me out on the track. Sometimes a manager simply lacks an understanding of what really happens on the track. If the same person is both my manager and someone who can support me with my riding, then that’s a huge advantage for me.”

What Agius particularly values about Davies

Agius followed his mentor’s racing career closely. For years, Davies battled it out with Jonathan Rea for the Superbike World Championship crown. Although he was unable to snatch a world title from his British rival, Agius was particularly impressed by his tenacity.

“I have great respect for how resilient he was and how long he was able to battle against Johnny,” emphasised Agius. “Sure, he didn’t win the World Championship against Johnny. But to be so mentally strong, to compete against the same rider for all those years – someone from the same region, let’s put it that way – and in doing so to be fighting, to some extent, for the pride of the British Isles, that deserves the utmost respect.”

For Agius, Davies is therefore not just an important mentor today. Even during his active career, the Welshman was one of his role models. What impressed him most? “He had incredible courage and enormous resilience. I think he achieved a great deal and was definitely someone I looked up to.”
