Phase 2: How Leo Rammerstorfer’s Moto3 career could unfold

Leo Rammerstorfer has not yet made a big impact in the Moto3 World Championship. However, the chances are good that the rookie from Austria will be back on the grid in 2027 – on a KTM.

The year 2026 had already begun when the Road Racing World Championship finally found a German-speaking rider. Leo Rammerstorfer had agreed terms with the renowned SIC58 Squadra Corse team to join the Moto3 paddock. The Rookies Cup rider from the Mühlviertel region of Austria seized the opportunity and took over the previously agreed place of the Swiss rider Noah Dettwiler, who was forced to end his World Championship career following a devastating crash in Malaysia.

Leo Rammerstorfer, who came into the World Championship as a complete unknown after finishing 13th in the 2025 Red Bull Rookies Cup, quickly earned respect. He scored his first point on his debut in Thailand, whilst in Brazil the rookie impressed in qualifying with a ninth-place finish and a place in Q2. Following some heavy crashes and sobering races back in Europe, the Austrian – who celebrated his 22nd birthday last week – was back to facing the realities of Moto3. Yet the Honda rider achieved the goal he had set himself – not to trail behind – straight away.

Switch to superior Moto3 KTM looks appealing

In the first race after the summer break and Rammerstorfer’s debut at Silverstone, he managed 17th place. In the World Championship standings, the number 5 rider sits in 24th place with four World Championship points. The rider himself is convinced that things will go better in future for the team-mate of Irishman Casey O’Gorman, following a learning year in 2026. In an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com, Leo Rammerstorfer had already discussed his Moto3 status, mentioning the difficulties he’d faced in adapting to the Japanese-built Moto3 machine.

With the support of his family’s management team, a switch to the KTM RC4 – which is superior in Moto3 not just in terms of numbers – could be achieved for 2027. It will be the last year in which the delicate single-cylinder prototypes are used. In 2028, a revolution will follow with standardised Yamaha motorbikes.

Leo Rammerstorfer: team-mate to Rookies’ Cup leader Fernandez in 2027?

Until then, the aim is to establish himself in the Moto3 World Championship. A promising opportunity would be a move to Alessandro Tonucci’s Team MTA. MTA is planning a fresh start with its rider line-up for 2027. The current leader in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, Benat Fernandez, has already been signed. As previously reported on SPEEDWEEK.com, Tonucci secured the Spaniard’s services early on.

The second KTM could be ridden by Leo Rammerstorfer. It is unclear whether a binding agreement has already been reached regarding a partnership for 2027, but Austria’s fastest rider is considered a promising candidate for the switch to the brand. If the move goes ahead, Leo Rammerstorfer is likely to be the sole German-speaking rider on the grid again next year. This is because other promising talents, foremost among them Fynn Kratochwil (16), are still too young and inexperienced for the World Championship stage.
