MXoN Team Italy: Young squad without Antonio Cairoli

With his race appearances in the USA and at the Keiheuvel International in Belgium, Antonio Cairoli put himself in the running for the MXoN. The 40-year-old stated that he was, of course, ready to represent Italy again in 2026.

Last year, Cairoli was still part of the Italian squad at the Ironman Raceway, finishing 13th in the third race. With Cairoli (MXGP), Andrea Adamo (MX2) and Andrea Bonacorsi (Open), Italy achieved a creditable sixth place overall.

Italy is banking on younger riders

Cairoli was not selected for this year’s squad. Team manager Thomas Traversini is instead backing the next generation: Andrea Adamo, Andrea Bonacorsi and Ferruccio Zanchi have an average age of just 22.

Two Ducatisti on the starting grid

With Andrea Bonacorsi and Ferruccio Zanchi, two Italians will be competing on their home-grown iconic brand, Ducati. Zanchi suffered a heavy crash at Foxhill and was subsequently forced to take a break. The factory rider is expected to be fit to race again in time for the MXoN in early October.

Thomas Traversini is optimistic

“We’re travelling to France knowing that we can make our mark there,” explained team manager Thomas Traversini. “In 2023, we were on the podium at Ernée. The track suits our riders and the whole team is highly motivated. I can guarantee that everyone will give their all.”
