Good news regarding MotoGP’s unlucky rider Marco Bezzecchi: the Aprilia works rider has successfully undergone surgery following his serious crash in qualifying at the Sachsenring. As Aprilia announced just a few minutes before the start of the German Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon, the fracture to his left collarbone was surgically treated and stabilised by Dr Giuseppe Porcellini at Sassuolo University Hospital. The operation was a success.

However, Aprilia is not yet willing to give a precise timetable for the Italian’s return. It is still too early to do so following the operation. Nevertheless, the Noale-based manufacturer’s factory team is optimistic that Bezzecchi will be back on the starting grid for the next MotoGP race weekend at Silverstone.

A definitive prognosis regarding his recovery time is expected in the coming days and will depend on how his healing progresses.

Complicated fracture: how long will recovery take?

Bezzecchi suffered a heavy crash during Q2 at the Sachsenring on Saturday, breaking his left collarbone in the process. According to initial reports, it was not a clean fracture but a complicated injury.

The Italian was unable to take part in the Sachsenring Sprint and also missed the Grand Prix. Bezzecchi had already gone into the final MotoGP weekend before the summer break in a weakened state. Two weeks ago, the former World Championship leader had crashed at high speed during the Grand Prix at Assen.

The Sachsenring crash was the latest in a long series of setbacks. His emotional victory at Mugello was followed by numerous difficult moments. The run of bad luck began at Balaton Park in early June, when Bezzecchi was rammed by his Aprilia team-mate Jorge Martin at the start.

Bezzecchi then crashed during the MotoGP Sprint at Brno and subsequently lost control. The Aprilia star was suspended for the Czech Grand Prix after slapping a marshal. This was followed by crashes at Assen and the Sachsenring, which cost Bezzecchi many points in the championship. Ahead of the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, Bezzecchi was in second place in the riders’ standings.
