Cecchinello (LCR) on 850cc bikes: Safer and easier to control

The new MotoGP regulations will come into force in 2027. These stipulate a reduction in engine capacity from 1,000 to 850 cc, reduced aerodynamics and the removal of all suspension height adjustment systems (devices). In addition, there will be a switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres.

There has already been much discussion about the new regulations. Test riders and some regular riders, who have already had the opportunity to test the new prototypes, have also shared their first impressions. On 4 September, our colleagues at motogp.com published a video in which LCR Honda team principal Lucio Cecchinello, VR46 team manager Pablo Nieto and Carlo Merlini from Gresini Racing discuss, amongst other things, the rule changes.

From the perspective of the MotoGP teams – which changes will have the greatest impact? “The direction we are taking with the 850cc bikes and reduced aerodynamics could mean that the riders will have safer motorbikes at their disposal. Because the bike will be slightly narrower, more agile and easier to control. The bike is slightly lighter and will also have less power,” said Lucio Cecchinello. For the fans, however, the spectacle would be no less appealing. “That doesn’t mean spectators won’t like it, because they won’t even notice. I think that, from a team’s perspective, all of this will have a positive impact on the sport.”

Pablo Nieto, however, is convinced that the new bikes won’t be much slower – and for a specific reason: “I think the lap times will be relatively similar. Because one of the biggest changes we’ll see is the tyres – that’s my personal opinion.”

“Some riders who have already tested the 850cc bikes say that the sport will benefit from this – because there will be more battles on the track,” said Cecchinello. “It will be much easier to overtake – we’ll see,” added Pablo Nieto.

The fact is, it won’t be long before the new MotoGP era begins. On 21 September, some riders will have the opportunity to test the 850cc bikes fitted with Pirelli tyres during a further test at the Red Bull Ring – immediately after the Grand Prix weekend. Then, on 1 December, all riders will be on their new bikes at the Valencia test.
