From the Moto4 European Cup, Fynn Kratochwil heads to the Sachsenring GP

At the Red Bull Rookies Cup race in Assen, the teenager from Thuringia had to swallow another defeat, but in Jerez he made it into the top five in the Moto4 Cup.

As well as competing in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, Fynn Kratochwil also has the Moto4 European Cup on his personal to-do list. Last weekend, his travels took him to Jerez in Spain, where the third race of the season took place.

“Jerez has never been a track that’s particularly suited me in recent years,” he said ahead of the race. “Nevertheless, I travelled there feeling confident because I’d already shown in the Red Bull Rookies Cup that I can be competitive on that track. Together with my team, we had a clear plan and a structured approach for the whole weekend. We worked well right from Friday. Although I was still lacking a bit of pace on my own, we knew exactly what we needed to work on.”

Things went smoothly right from the Jerez qualifying session

“On Saturday, I managed to qualify straight through to Qualifying 2,” said Kratochwil happily. “I finished eighth there, which meant 15th on the grid. We went into the race from that position, aiming to learn as much as possible whilst also securing the best possible result.”

“Unfortunately, I didn’t get off to the best start in the first race and lost touch with the leading group as a result,” he concluded. “I then battled it out in the second group and managed to work my way up bit by bit. After dropping back as far as 19th at one stage, I eventually crossed the line in eighth. The race was an excellent learning experience and great fun at the same time. Nevertheless, it was clear to me that I belong in the leading group, and that’s exactly where I wanted to be in the second race.”

“So I was fully focused for Race 2. The start was much better and I was back in 14th place after the first lap,” he reported. “From there, I worked my way up step by step and spent most of the race in 8th place, in the leading group. In the closing stages, I wanted to attack and try to move up even further. My aim was to fight for a place in the top five or even better. Shortly before the end of the race, however, another rider crashed, which brought out a red flag and ended the race early. As a result, I was classified in fifth place.”

From now on, the focus is on the Sachsenring

“This meant I was able to secure my first top-five result in the Moto4 European Cup,” said Kratochwil, “a result we can be very pleased with. Especially on a track that doesn’t usually suit me particularly well, this weekend shows that we’ve made great progress as a team. It wasn’t an easy weekend, but we worked consistently and kept improving. That’s why, overall, we can be very satisfied.”

Now all eyes are on the next highlight: the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at the Sachsenring. “A home race in front of the German fans,” says Kratochwil, “something very special. I’m really looking forward to it and will give it my all to represent the German flag as best I can in front of a home crowd.”
