Record-breaking world champion Jonathan Rea: His Superbike career in six chapters

Since making the step up to the World Superbike Championship in 2009 as Supersport World Championship runner-up, Jonathan Rea has rewritten the record books. The 39-year-old dominates the key categories: the family man has secured six world titles, 119 wins and 264 podium finishes in 479 race starts – an incredible record that is set to remain unrivalled for a long time to come.

Rea set most of his records during his time with the Kawasaki works team, though he also won races with Honda. However, in two years with Yamaha, he managed only one top-three finish and one pole position. On 25 August 2025, Rea announced his retirement as a full-time Superbike rider. On 11 November, Honda Racing Corporation announced that the record-breaking world champion had been signed as a test rider. In this role, Rea took part in tests and wildcard appearances, and also stepped in for injured regular riders.

To honour Rea and his unique career, Superbike promoter Dorna has produced a six-part documentary featuring many fascinating insights. Rivals, team members, fellow riders and his wife Tatia all have their say in it. The series is titled ‘The Greatest’.

“I’m really proud of this documentary. As a fan of motorbike racing, I’ve always loved watching the documentaries produced by Dorna about riders such as Lorenzo, Stoner and Márquez. They’ve allowed me to learn more about them – both as riders and as people – and to take away something that has helped me in my own career,” said Rea during the presentation. “I’m incredibly grateful for all the work that has gone into the production. I’ve already watched the first few episodes, so I know how the story ends, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how the fans experience it.”

Rea’s career is inextricably linked to Superbike and has consisted not only of highs but also of lows. The six-time world champion fought his way back from every low point.

“The Superbike World Championship has meant everything to me. It has allowed me to live my dream, and if there’s one word that describes my career, it’s probably perseverance. There were so many moments when things were difficult, but I always found a way to keep fighting and overcome the challenges. Above all, I consider myself incredibly lucky to have shared this journey with so many wonderful people.”
