Failed to make the cut: Tarran Mackenzie did not receive the all-clear from the race doctors

Of all places, it was at his home race at Donington Park that Tarran Mackenzie suffered fractures to his collarbone, shoulder blade and left tibia and fibula following a crash. Whilst the fractures to his tibia and collarbone were treated in separate operations, the fibula and scapula were left to heal naturally, given the long summer break.

There were fears that the seven-week summer break might not be long enough for a full recovery. After a month, the privateer Ducati rider was still complaining of problems around his ankle. However, when he received permission from his treating doctors in England to take part in the race, the 2021 British Superbike Champion regained hope.

However, race doctor Monica Lazzarotti came to a different conclusion during Thursday’s mandatory medical examination and declared Mackenzie unfit to race! The 30-year-old is deeply disappointed.

“I’ve worked so hard since the crash to get back to 100 per cent fitness, but the doctors have advised me to give the healing process for my broken leg more time,” said a dejected Mackenzie – though he is understanding. “As disappointed as I am, I still understand the situation. I have to look after my body, and I know I couldn’t have done any more in terms of my recovery – unfortunately, that’s the situation I find myself in.”

Mackenzie’s team, MGM Optical Express Racing, apparently has no plans to field a replacement rider for the Magny-Cours round. As a result, the field of competitors has shrunk to 21 riders.
