Next disaster: Supercross World Championship round in Birmingham cancelled

The WSX Supercross World Championship has suffered another setback. The British Grand Prix in Birmingham, originally scheduled for 10 October, has been cancelled. The series organiser explained at length that the aim is to “secure long-term investment” and to “build a stronger and more sustainable platform for World Supercross, for teams, riders, partners and fans.”

Money remains the problem

Put simply, this means that the series organiser is apparently running out of money, and the phrase “securing long-term investments” is likely a roundabout way of suggesting that investors are being sought to keep the project afloat.

“Although we remain confident about the future of the championship, the current situation requires us to take some short-term operational measures. For this reason, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Grand Prix on 10 October in Birmingham, England.” Ticket holders will receive an email within the next 24 hours. Refunds will be processed automatically via the original payment method and should be received within 14–21 days.

I can hear the message, but I just don’t have the faith

“We all believe in World Supercross and know that there is a global audience for this sport. Motorcycles and accessories are consumed in markets all over the world, and we must continue to work on reaching these target groups,” the statement continues. The message has got through, but the conviction is lacking.

Still no confirmed calendar

An interesting side note: the dates for the upcoming Grands Prix have now also been removed from the organiser’s website. The event in Buenos Aires was scheduled for 24 October and the one in Australia for 21 November. These dates are now listed as ‘tba’ (to be announced) once again. Only the dates of 21 November in Australia and 5 December in New Zealand appear on the WSX calendar.
