Supercross World Championship, Calgary: Cooper Webb (Yamaha) wins season opener

The FIM Supercross World Championship (WSX) continues to be dogged by bad luck: the season opener at the open-air McMahon Stadium in Calgary had to be abandoned prematurely during the third SX1 final due to strong gusts of wind and the onset of rain, and could not be restarted. As a result, no points were awarded for the third final and some SX1 riders came away empty-handed.

Dean Wilson won Superpole

Briton Dean Wilson (Honda), who had actually only been signed up as a stand-in for Joey Savatgy, won the SX1 Superpole ahead of the three Americans Cooper Webb (Yamaha), Christian Craig (Honda) and Justin Hill (KTM).

Crash for defending champion Anderson

Defending champion Jason Anderson (Suzuki), who was competing in his first race in Calgary after a months-long break, crashed in the very first race and finished the day in Canada with a 13-9 result, placing him only 12th overall.

Cooper Webb wins with a 2-1 result

Stark factory rider Vince Friese took the holeshot on his e-bike in the first sprint, whilst Cooper Webb had to fight his way to the front. Justin Hill (KTM) won the first race ahead of Webb and Wilson. The second sprint race was dominated by Cooper Webb. With a 2-1 result, he was the day’s winner ahead of Wilson (3-3) and Hill, who finished the second sprint in fifth place.
