Domi Aegerter without a ride for 2027: Will Kawasaki help him make his case?

Kawasaki and Dominique Aegerter began the 2026 Supersport World Championship with high hopes; together, they aimed to finally bring the title back to the ‘Green’ team for the first time since 2016 (Kenan Sofuoglu). What followed was a season that fell far short of expectations, leaving both sides disappointed. After two-thirds of the season, Kawasaki has only one podium finish to show for it: Jeremy Alcoba finished third in the first race at Donington Park behind Tom Booth-Amos (Triumph) and championship leader Albert Arenas (AS Yamaha). Aegerter has not finished higher than sixth in any race so far.

Before the long summer break began in mid-July – the final third of the season doesn’t start until early September in France – Kawasaki announced David Salvador as its first factory Supersport rider for 2027; the 23-year-old Spaniard currently leads the Sportbike World Championship.

It has long been clear that Aegerter and Kawasaki will part ways after this season, whilst team-mate Alcoba’s position is also under threat. “I have a few riders on my list from the Moto2 and Supersport World Championships,” team boss Manuel Puccetti told SPEEDWEEK.com. “But it’s still too early to make such a decision. We want to see who’s available.”

Aegerter believes: Finally found a solid foundation

Kawasaki isn’t burying its head in the sand and carried out testing on 27 and 28 August in high temperatures in Cremona, northern Italy. Aegerter completed around 140 laps and said: “This two-day test was a welcome opportunity after the long summer break. It was important to get back into the swing of things ahead of the next race at Magny-Cours in a week’s time. We had a full programme, during which we focused mainly on engine braking and the suspension. We managed to make significant progress in both areas. We now have a good foundation to build on, which we’ll continue to refine over the race weekend in France. Above all, I’m delighted to be back on my race bike and can’t wait to resume the season this coming weekend. Many thanks to the team for making these two days possible, and to all the lads in the pit for their hard work.”

Aegerter urgently needs strong results to put himself in contention for 2027. His brother Kevin, who has been managing Dominique’s career for many years, has various options in mind. Traditionally, many decisions regarding the next season are made at Magny-Cours.
