Honda responds to the 2026 Aston Martin debacle: new project manager

Who would have thought this before the 2026 Formula 1 season? Aston Martin-Honda, with a top-team budget, Adrian Newey on board and state-of-the-art facilities – this Aston Martin actually managed to scrape together just a single pitiful point across the first ten Grand Prix weekends of the season, courtesy of Fernando Alonso in Monaco. And that single point was practically handed to them on a plate due to numerous penalties incurred by their rivals.

The once-proud Aston Martin sits second from bottom in the Constructors’ Championship; only newcomer Cadillac is doing worse, having failed to score any points.

Just in time for the final race weekend before the summer break, the Greens brought an improved model onto the track, which is intended to give Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll better chances. Alonso said thank you and finished ninth at Zandvoort after the summer break, following a brilliant race.

This was followed by another crushing defeat at Monza, where Aston Martin-Honda was alarmingly slower than its rivals on the straights. Even at his home Grand Prix in Madrid, the seemingly ageless Fernando Alonso was unable to make any headway.

Following the Madrid Grand Prix, Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) confirmed that Tetsushi Kakuda is stepping down as project leader for the Formula 1 power unit, with his deputy, Yoichiro Fukao, taking over.
