Daniela Guillen (GASGAS): First WMX title with a one-two finish

With a lead of just six points over six-time world champion Kiara Fontanesi (GASGAS), Daniela Guillen had travelled to Darwin for the fifth and final round of the 2026 Women’s Motocross World Championship. At the Hidden Valley circuit, the 20-year-old Spaniard won both races, thereby securing the world title for the first time in her career.

She had already set the course for victory in the first race on Saturday. Behind her, defending champion Lotte van Drunen (Yamaha) fought her way up the field. With two laps to go, the Dutch rider overtook Fontanesi to take second place. Four-time world champion Courtney Duncan (Kawasaki) also overtook Fontanesi. Guillen won with a 4.8-second lead over van Drunen and Duncan. Fontanesi finished only fourth. Guillen thus extended her lead in the World Championship standings from six to 13 points ahead of the decisive second race.

Fontanesi lost her last chance at the title

In the second race on Sunday, the American Lachlan Turner (Yamaha) got off to the best start. Guillen initially started the race in fourth place, whilst Fontanesi, under pressure in the battle for her seventh World Championship title, crashed. Fontanesi thus lost her last chance to catch the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Guillen worked her way up the field, took the lead from Turner and sealed the title with her second race victory. Turner finished second ahead of van Drunen and Duncan. Fontanesi could only manage seventh place following her crash.

With a maximum of 50 points, Daniela Guillen won the Australian Grand Prix ahead of Lotte van Drunen (42) and Courtney Duncan (38). Turner finished fourth overall with 35 points, whilst Fontanesi ended the day in fifth place with 32 points.

For Guillen, it was the perfect end to a consistent season. She finished on the podium in all ten World Championship races, winning five of them and claiming victory in three of the five Grands Prix. Fontanesi had briefly taken the Red Plate from her at the British World Championship round, but Guillen reclaimed the World Championship lead in Arnhem and did not relinquish it thereafter.

“It was the worst weekend ever,” explained the six-time world champion. “I don’t really understand what was going on. Yesterday I felt physically very unwell during the race. I couldn’t ride properly, breathe or move. Today I was fit enough to ride, but I didn’t feel comfortable on the track at all. I was skidding all over the place until I finally crashed. After that, it was very difficult to get back to the front. When I realised the title was no longer possible, I lost the motivation to try and make up the ground. It’s a shame I couldn’t really fight for the title. Up until this weekend, it had been a brilliant season. I’d had so many good races and, actually, almost everything had gone brilliantly. But after the problems at the last two World Championship rounds, it was virtually impossible to still be in contention for the championship. Congratulations to Daniela. She deserves the title.”

Alexandra Massury in the top 10

For German rider Alexandra Massury (KTM), the long journey ‘Down Under’ was well worth it: with seventh and ninth-place finishes, she ended the Grand Prix in a strong eighth place overall. This also saw her make up ground in the World Championship standings once again, securing a place in the top 10 as the season drew to a close. A performance that deserves respect and recognition.
