Motocross tragedy: Tragic details surrounding the death of Patrick Mitterbäck

The death of motocross veteran Patrick Mitterbäck has recently made headlines and caused widespread sadness. The Styrian, from the Liezen district, was involved in a private accident whilst riding his motocross bike. Mitterbäck had made a name for himself over the years in the Austrian motocross scene as both a rider and team boss – and the 46-year-old was also very popular.

News of Mitterbäck’s death spread like wildfire. The fatal incident took place on a training track in St. Gotthard (Szenetgotthard) in Hungary – very close to the Austrian border. Patrick Mitterbäck is survived by, amongst others, an eight-year-old daughter.

The circumstances of the accident were dramatic. According to reports from those close to him, Mitterbäck is said to have been involved in construction work. He apparently failed to notice an excavator parked too close to a jump and collided with the bucket of the heavy machinery.

Patrick Mitterbäck had devoted himself heart and soul to off-road sport for many years. In 2013, after bringing his own amateur racing career to a close, he founded his own team, the ‘Mitterbäck Racing Motocross Team’. Under his guidance, the young Lukas Osek rose to the top of the national rankings – securing the Austrian national titles in the junior class in 2024 and 2025.
