For the first time since 2000, a round of the Motocross World Championship is taking place once again on the legendary Foxhills hills, south-east of Swindon in the county of Wiltshire. The track is renowned for its steep slopes, which have become very rare on modern circuits. The track has undergone extensive refurbishment (as reported by SPEEDWEEK.com), without, however, sacrificing its ‘old-school’ character. There are now additional rhythm sections and a massive uphill jump, whilst the steep slopes for which Foxhill is so well known have been retained. We can therefore look forward to a special motocross weekend.
Ideal weather forecast in England
As we all know, rain is always a bit of an issue in England, but not this coming weekend. With daytime highs of 23 degrees and sunshine, riders and spectators alike will find perfect conditions.
How fit is Lucas Coenen?
Following his crash in the first race at Southwick (USA), Lucas Coenen (KTM) decided not to start the second race, though the Belgian is not thought to have sustained any injuries. We’ll find out more on Saturday. But even if he were to miss the race entirely, Lucas Coenen would still remain the World Championship leader, as he holds a 68-point lead over Jeffrey Herlings (Honda) and a maximum of 60 points are up for grabs at any one Grand Prix. Lucas can approach the weekend with confidence.
MXGP World Championship standings after round 11 of 19:
Lucas Coenen (B), KTM, 566 points
Jeffrey Herlings (NL), Honda, 498, (-68)
Romain Febvre (F), Kawasaki, 443, (-123)
Tim Gajser (SLO), Yamaha, 404, (-162)
Maxime Renaux (F), Yamaha, 364, (-202)
Sacha Coenen has just had surgery
It was only on Monday this week that MX2 World Championship leader Sacha Coenen (KTM) underwent surgery for the broken collarbone he sustained in the second race at Southwick. First of all, the Belgian needs clearance from the chief medical officer to compete at Foxhill. A 14-point lead over the Spanish Triumph works rider Guillem Farres is not much, and under the current circumstances he could lose his World Championship lead.
Can hot-headed Sacha even ride slowly?
Even more critical than the handicap of his operated shoulder is the question of whether Sacha can mentally adjust to his situation. He crashes frequently as it is. If he isn’t 100 per cent fit, the risk of crashing increases further – and with it, the risk of re-injuring his recently operated shoulder. Either way, this weekend is set to be a huge challenge for him. The team will, of course, urge him to ride slowly and cautiously. Whether he can actually do that, however, is the big question. His rivals, led by Guillem Farres, will naturally be keen to capitalise on the situation, and so there could be a new championship leader in the MX2 World Championship following the Grand Prix of Great Britain.
Will Simon Längenfelder continue to close the gap?
Simon Längenfelder also has the chance at Foxhill to reduce the gap to the leaders. His main rival in the title defence is now Guillem Farres. At the last World Championship round in Johannesburg, he finished second on the podium, hopefully marking a turnaround from his recent dip in form. Simon loved Matterley Basin, where he won several times. Foxhills is new to everyone. It will be crucial to find the right set-up quickly and get to grips with the new track.
MX2 World Championship standings after 11 of 19 rounds:
Sacha Coenen (B), KTM, 518 points
Guillem Farres (E), Triumph, 504, (-14)
Simon Längenfelder (D), KTM, 467, (-51)
Camden Mc Lellan (ZA), Triumph, 455, (-63)
Liam Everts (B), Husqvarna, 433, (-85)

WMX Round Three
The women’s motocross riders will contest their third of a total of five rounds at Foxhills. Spain’s Daniela Guillen (GASGAS) has conceded just one race win so far this season, but Italy’s record-holding world champion Kiara Fontanesi (GASGAS) is hot on her heels, trailing by just 6 points. The Dutch defending champion, Lotte van Drunen (Yamaha), has used the break following the German Grand Prix to compete in two rounds of the US Nationals. She currently sits in 9th place in the World Championship standings, 44 points behind the leader.
