Red flag in Uddevalla: Jeffrey Herlings (HRC) wins after race abandonment

The second MXGP race in Uddevalla ended in a race cancellation following a collision between Kevin Brumann (Husqvarna) and Jago Geerts (Beta). The two riders collided in mid-air on a downhill jump. Brumann initially lay motionless on the ground and required medical attention. For safety reasons, the race was abandoned. Kevin Brumann was able to get back on his feet after a few minutes and leave the scene under his own steam. Jago Geerts also appeared to be a little shaken after the incident, but was likewise able to get up unaided.

A dramatic start to the race

Local hero Isak Gifting (Yamaha) collided with Ducati factory rider Calvin Vlaanderen at the end of the start straight, causing the South African to go down and retire from the race. Gifting ended up in the barriers but was able to continue and still managed to fight his way up to 14th place in the race. Jeremy Seewer, who had already crashed in the first race, was also forced to retire.

Holeshot Vialle

French HRC factory rider Tom Vialle took the holeshot, but his compatriot Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) took the early lead. Behind him, Jeffrey Herlings (Honda) moved into position and, before the end of the first lap, Herlings took the lead ahead of Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) and Tim Gajser (Yamaha).

Red flag after 15 laps

Following the incident involving Brumann and Geerts, the race was abandoned. Herlings won with a lead of 6.2 seconds over Febvre, Gajser and Vialle. As the last completed lap was counted as the result, Kevin Brumann, who had crashed, still received one World Championship point in 20th place. The Swiss rider is currently 25th in the World Championship standings after 15 rounds.

Herlings extends his lead

Herlings thus secured another maximum points haul and extended his lead in the World Championship. In Scandinavia, ‘The Bullet’ increased his lead over Romain Febvre, in second place, from 104 to 116 points.

Next stop: Arnhem

Next weekend, the championship continues with the 16th round on the sandy tracks of Arnhem in the Netherlands. This will be followed by the final three Grands Prix in Turkey, China and Australia.
