Acosta’s crew chief: “The team went on a journey to hell and back”

On Sunday, following the official events, the paddock in Spielberg turned into a party zone around the KTM trucks. The orange family celebrated long into the afternoon in high spirits amongst the trucks with MotoGP debut winner Pedro Acosta. Acosta’s crew chief, Paul Trevathan, also let his joy at KTM’s home victory at the Red Bull Ring show.

Trevathan had previously made a name for himself in the Motocross World Championship with Jan de Groot’s Kawasaki factory team in Europe, before later switching to road racing. The New Zealander had some powerful words to say: “This victory was the ultimate experience! And to know just how much Pedro deserved it. It means the world to all of us – the company went through hell and back!”

Trevathan on the sprint crash: “We had to talk about it; he was really angry with himself”

Trevathan continued: “Pedro joined us at a difficult time – we weren’t able to develop as we’d hoped during that phase. This victory now is incredible!” Speaking about the hours following Saturday’s sprint crash, Paul said: “Pedro was fast, that was plain to see. He was overconfident. We had to talk about it; he was really angry with himself. He was absolutely furious for an hour – the first thing he said was that it was his fault.”

Sunday didn’t get off to an ideal start for the Acosta crew either. Trevathan: “The crash in the warm-up didn’t help either. But we managed to sort it out, and he then put everything into practice. I’m really impressed!”

Speaking about Pedro Acosta’s unique character, his close friend Trevathan said: “He’s absolutely determined every single time he gets on the bike. It’s fantastic that he’s now achieved what he’s always dreamt of. The lovely thing about Pedro is: what you see is what you get. He’s also learnt a lot. Sometimes he was a bit mad. But we’ve found a way for him to be just as he is – after all, he has to be happy himself. His focus was spot on right from day one. His ability to learn is incredible – you tell him something once and he can put it into practice. He trusts everyone in the team – they all deserve it so much!”
