Brad Binder (6th) had to save fuel: “Bloody Moto2 mapping!”

Brad Binder put in a strong performance in his final race for KTM at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The South African, who will be racing for BMW in the World Superbike Championship in the 2027 season, fought his way up the field from 11th on the grid. After a few laps, Binder found himself in 6th place with world champion Marc Márquez immediately ahead of him – he was even able to slip past the Ducati star following a mistake, before being overtaken himself by Fermin Aldeguer on the Gresini Ducati.

In the end, Binder won the battle against Aldeguer, securing his best result of the season so far with sixth place – he had finished seventh at both the season opener in Thailand and in Barcelona. The late-braker, who had secured that legendary victory on slicks on a damp track in August 2021, finished just over eight seconds behind his team-mate Pedro Acosta at the Red Bull Ring. “I’d say, overall, it was a successful weekend – I’m happy with my best result of the season. I gave it my all,” Binder summed up.

Brad Binder: “The crash in the warm-up didn’t help”

Yet the day had got off to anything but a good start for Binder. He crashed in the warm-up – as did Acosta. “The crash in the warm-up didn’t help,” confirmed the 31-year-old. “Apart from that, though, it went quite well. I’m also pleased with the pace we achieved in the race and happy with our work. Congratulations to the team and also to Pedro on his first win – he really deserves it!”

Binder himself had to ease off after his early push. “I never had the speed to keep up with Ogura. When I was riding alone, I got the warning about fuel consumption,” explained BB33. After that, the race became more turbulent. “I had to save fuel and switch to that bloody Moto2 mapping. Marc and Aldeguer caught up with me as if I were standing still. That wasn’t ideal, of course! As soon as I could open the throttle normally again, I was able to make up the gap.” However, the difference in speed has an impact at the Red Bull Ring. Binder: “You reach the braking points so much faster that you have to find those reference points all over again. But it was definitely my best weekend of the current season.”
