Pedro Acosta (KTM): Extreme kart race ahead of the MotoGP event in Aragon

The MotoGP World Championship continues this coming weekend at MotorLand Aragon in Spain. Red Bull KTM star Pedro Acosta has used the past few days leading up to his next home race to embark on a special adventure. The 22-year-old took part in a go-kart event almost incognito, wearing his sponsor Quad Lock’s overalls. The venue was the legendary Circuit Bugatti at Le Mans, which also hosts the MotoGP World Championship every year.

Conditions in France were very challenging. The event was, in fact, a 24-hour team race. On top of that, Acosta didn’t have a motorhome on site this time. This meant that, to pass the time between race sessions, next year’s Ducati factory rider rested on a wide, inflatable mattress at the back of his team pit. To keep everyone’s spirits up, pizza was served to the entire crew right in the pit – and there was no shortage of fun on the track either.

Acosta: Endurance experience on four wheels

What was the story behind this? Acosta was racing with the Go-Karts Mar Menor team – a circuit near his hometown of Murcia. Acosta often visits the track privately for training purposes – even on his Supersport bike. At Le Mans, the race fittingly got underway with a classic Le Mans start. Acosta was assigned his usual start number 37 on his team kart. Acosta, who tackled the very first stint straight from 8th on the grid, was thrilled by the endurance experience on four wheels.

Back to the Spaniard’s main focus: as KTM has now secured permission from the MotoGP governing bodies to open up the RC16 engines and has recently replaced critical components at the engine centre in Munderfing, there is also an additional glimmer of hope for Acosta in the World Championship. The fact is: the top three are still within reach for the outgoing Spaniard. Acosta trails third-placed Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia) by 40 points.
