Razgatlioglu’s crash landing: Spectacular crash at the Red Bull Flugtag

Toprak Razgatlioglu is not only known for his extraordinary skills on a motorbike. Off the racetrack too, the three-time Superbike World Champion regularly causes a stir with spectacular stunts. Last weekend, the Turkish rider took on a somewhat different challenge.

Razgatlioglu took part in the Red Bull Flugtag in his home country. In this unusual competition, participants attempt to take off from a ramp in homemade flying machines and cover as great a distance as possible over the water.

For the Pramac Yamaha rider, the flying machine was designed to reflect his actual profession: Razgatlioglu sat on a mock-up of a Yamaha R6, to which a large wing had been attached. The motorbike was set to become a flying machine – at least for a few metres.

The Yamaha never took off

But it never got that far. Razgatlioglu and his unusual vehicle didn’t even manage to reach the end of the launch ramp in a controlled manner.

Several helpers pushed the contraption from behind to get it up to the necessary speed. Even before Razgatlioglu could leave the ramp with his flying machine, the contraption lost its balance. The 29-year-old tipped over to one side along with the R6 mock-up and landed in the water.

A rather unusual crash for the Turkish rider, who is known for his mastery of his bike. Razgatlioglu emerged unscathed from the incident, but immediately afterwards appeared less than impressed with the work of his pushers. Manager Kenan Sofuoglu watched the spectacle from a distance and grimaced after the crash-landing.

The botched attempt at flight is likely to have been a welcome change of pace for the MotoGP rookie nonetheless. Razgatlioglu has had close ties with Red Bull for years and regularly uses the partnership for extraordinary stunts.

It comes as little surprise that the Turkish rider is up for this sort of fun. Wheelies, stoppies and other stunts have been his trademark for years. At the Red Bull Air Race, however, even Razgatlioglu had to admit that balancing a motorbike on one wheel is apparently easier for him than learning to fly on a Yamaha R6.
