Warm-up, Silverstone: Ducati-Aprilia mix with Alex Márquez at the front

Following a surprise sprint session – which was as much about the grip issues faced by several top riders as it was about the result itself – the aim during the brief warm-up for the British Grand Prix was to review the strategy. Contrary to all expectations, the soft tyre compound did not prove to be the superior choice over the short distance, and attention was now almost universally focused on the medium tyres.

The stable conditions proved helpful in this regard. On Sunday, too, the sun is shining over the heart of British motorsport; temperatures are pleasant, and no rain is expected.

The 10-minute warm-up was also important for the three riders who had crashed on Saturday. Raul Fernandez, Cal Crutchlow and Iker Lecuona had all crashed independently of one another. The aim here was to carry out a functional check on both rider and machine; in Raul Fernandez’s case, this also involved checking the clutch, which had caused the Spaniard some concern at the start of the sprint.

Champion Marc Marquez had been among the big losers of the Sprint. The Ducati Lenovo rider completed the warm-up without any problems. On the final lap, the number 93 clocked a time of 1:58.154, which ultimately secured him third place. Bagnaia, who had slipped down to 17th in the sprint, held back again to finish 11th.

Aprilia were once again at the top initially. Raúl Fernández stunned everyone with a time of 1:57.753, putting him in the lead. An even faster lap was prevented by Cal Crutchlow, whom Fernández had caught up with. Alex Márquez completed the lap without any traffic to slow him down. The Gresini rider, who had already finished as the best non-Aprilia rider in 4th place in the sprint, ended the short session at the top with a time of 1:57.680.
