Petr Najman edges out Marek Cerveny, with Wolfgang Schuster in P6

The front row of the grid for the first IRRC Supersport race in Horice, Czech Republic, was firmly in the hands of the home riders. Petr Najman had secured pole position ahead of Marek Cerveny and Matej Vit. Behind them on the grid were Switzerland’s Mauro Poncini, the Dutchman Ilja Caljouw and another local hero, Karel Brandtner. Wolfgang Schuster started the race in seventh place, just ahead of his German compatriot Rico Vetter.

As early as the first of ten laps, Najman and Cerveny were able to pull away from the rest of the field. The two Triumph riders fought fiercely for the lead, with Najman skilfully managing to fend off the championship leader and defending champion. He was also able to repel the final attack with a flawless lap. In doing so, he reduced his deficit in the championship standings to twelve points.

For a long time, Vit was lapping alone in third place. In the end, however, he had to be content to hold on to that position, as Poncini – who for a long time had been unable to get past his team-mate Caljouw – steadily closed the gap on the rider in third place, though the order remained unchanged.

Schuster, who had even been in fourth place for two laps, crossed the finish line in sixth place as the highest-placed German-speaking rider. Whilst Vetter saw the chequered flag in ninth place, the race ended in a crash for Sebastian Frotscher. His team-mate at Team Schleizer Dreieck, the Briton Gary Johnson, was unable to start at all due to an injury sustained in a previous crash.
