Speedway GP2 in Vojens: Mikkel Andersen claims U21 World Championship title despite crash

On the eve of the Danish Speedway Grand Prix, the SGP2 title was decided, with Mikkel Andersen having secured the best starting position thanks to a ten-point lead over Maksymilian Pawelczak. Andersen got off to a solid start to the evening’s racing with seven points from the first three heats, whilst the Pole managed just three points from his first two heats. In the third heat, Pawelczak went down in the very first bend and failed to score any points, which played into Andersen’s hands.

In the 13th race, Andersen also crashed. The Dane was in last place when he crashed in the starting bend on the third lap, leaving him on seven points. Despite this zero-point result, Andersen – unlike Pawelczak – still managed to qualify for the Last-Chance Heats, thereby securing a top-ten finish. Pawelczak, on the other hand, finished the evening in 13th place, meaning Andersen was crowned U21 World Champion ahead of schedule, as none of the four finalists could challenge him for the title.

“It’s been a tough year for me, so this is a huge relief and I can’t even put into words how much it means to me,” said the jubilant new SGP2 champion, who had suffered a fractured fibula in May. “A huge thank you to everyone around me who’ve done a fantastic job. I can’t thank them enough for their dedication. To become world champion after an injury – in my eyes, that’s absolutely incredible.”

Nicolai Heiselberg claimed victory in Vojens ahead of Wiktor Przyjemski and Adam Bednar, meaning that Heiselberg secured the World Championship silver and Przyjemski the bronze.
