Weight rule in the World Superbike Championship: When height becomes a career killer

Whilst body weight does not necessarily correlate with height, it certainly does with a Superbike rider’s fitness level. No successful racing rider can afford to carry around excess weight or not be in peak physical condition. For this reason, there can be a difference of up to 20 kg between a smaller rider like Álvaro Bautista and a taller, stockier rider like Danilo Petrucci.

When Bautista swept the titles in the 2022 and 2023 Superbike World Championships with 16 and 27 wins respectively, some riders attributed this to the veteran’s low body weight. This was because the Ducati V4R ridden by the now 41-year-old accelerated so much better that overtaking manoeuvres posed no problem for him. Since the introduction of the combined weight rule in 2024, Bautista has had to have 7 kg of ballast fitted to his motorbike. Since then, victories have become increasingly rare.

“Back then, I won eleven races in a row, Bulega 25. He is recognised for his great work, and quite rightly so, whilst there was always something to debate about my victories,” says Bautista to GPOne, expressing his surprise at the unequal treatment.

The two-time Superbike World Champion’s career may well come to an end after the current season. However, Bautista is also speaking out on behalf of future generations.

“If a young, smaller rider comes along, he won’t even want to start out because he knows he’ll have to carry the extra weight. What’s more, no manufacturer will choose a rider who has to carry extra weight around with him. Smaller riders therefore run the risk of not getting a place at all.”
