At first everything went wrong, then Yari Montella (Ducati) turned things round in Cremona

When Yari Montella went to bed on Saturday at the Superbike meeting in Cremona, he was still reeling from three crashes. On Sunday, the Ducati rider pulled himself together and rode his way onto the podium.

With crashes in the first and second practice sessions as well as in the first race, Yari Montella made life difficult for himself at the Cremona Circuit. The pressure to perform in front of his compatriots and at his home race – which was also his Barni team’s home race – was clearly taking its toll.

Yet the 26-year-old really couldn’t afford to make any mistakes, as the aim for the final three rounds of the 2026 Superbike World Championship is to secure third place in the championship whilst also winning the crucial Independent classification in the team championship! “When I got up on Sunday, I told myself that we needed to hit the reset button, because we can’t afford any more mistakes,” Montella emphasised on Sunday afternoon. “The end of the season is approaching and the most important and difficult phase has begun. We mustn’t let up.”

Finishing fourth in the sprint race, the Barni rider was narrowly beaten by the up-and-coming rookie Alberto Surra. In the second race, however, Montella stepped up a gear and turned the tables. “In the Superpole race, I started to regain that good feeling with the bike and was fighting for a podium place. I was a bit nervous because, after Saturday, I absolutely needed a solid result. I did overtake Surra, but he countered immediately and my chance of a podium finish was gone,” said the privateer Ducati rider. “In the second race, I wanted to secure a podium finish and when I saw it was within reach, I pushed harder. This time my pace was significantly better than Surra’s. The track was a bit more slippery than it had been on Saturday, and in the final laps I ran into some trouble and had to manage my lead. The other riders seemed to be having a similar time.”

In the end, victory in the Independent classification was in the bag and Team Marco Barnabo were over the moon. “We’re very proud to have won the ‘Best Independent Team’ title for the fourth time. This is an important recognition of the work done by the whole team and our two riders,” said the Italian jubilantly. “I’d like to thank all our sponsors. All of this is possible thanks to their support and commitment. There were so many of them here in Cremona to back us, and winning this title right in front of them means something very special.”
