Cremona: Kawasaki surprises with record-breaking pole – the top 20 within a second!

In free practice, Filippo Farioli (Yamaha) surprisingly set the fastest time of 1:31.837 at the Cremona Circuit in the Supersport category. Local hero Federico Caricasulo (ZX Moto) finished second and Jeremy Alcoba (Kawasaki) third. Championship leader Albert Arenas (Yamaha) had to settle for 11th place. The German-speaking riders Philipp Öttl (Ducati), Dominique Aegerter (Kawasaki) and Andreas Kofler (Yamaha) finished in 13th, 21st and 28th places respectively.

As had been the case that morning, the Superpole also took place in glorious late-summer weather. As the intermediate class has only one free practice session, the riders spent most of the 40-minute session fine-tuning their bikes. Qualifying began at 4 pm in warm conditions of 27 degrees Celsius.

After ten minutes, Matteo Ferrari (Ducati) set the first impressive lap time of 1:31.835 minutes. However, this was still 0.4 seconds slower than the pole record set by Adrian Huertas (Ducati) in 2024 of 1:31.478.

Moments later, the record appeared to have been broken: Kawasaki rider Jeremy Alcoba clocked an impressive lap time of 1:31.446. However, as the Spaniard exceeded the track limit in the final corner, his time was disallowed.

Shortly before the halfway point, Valentin Debise took the lead with a time of 1:31.823 minutes. Several riders, however, put in a final sprint at this stage to set a fast time. Lucas Mahias (Yamaha), however, thwarted his rivals’ efforts with a crash in Turn 11 – laps were disallowed due to yellow flags. What remained was an identical time of 1:31.764 minutes set by Debise (ZX Moto) and Jaume Masià (Ducati).

Unassuming but certainly fast, Domi Aegerter: in 13th place, the Swiss rider was just 0.5 seconds off the fastest time. Even Öttl in 20th place was only 0.7 seconds off!

At the front, Masia clocked further fast laps and improved his time marginally to 1:31.751. Arenas then joined the fray, setting the third-fastest time. With ten minutes remaining, the top five were separated by just 0.086 seconds! Most riders headed for the pit lane to have a new tyre fitted for their final attempt.

Can Öncü was the first to do so, securing provisional pole position, but then Masia set a record lap of 1:31.316 minutes! The Supersport aces struggled to beat this time, especially as a crash by Raffaele De Rosa (QJ Motor) in the closing stages brought out the yellow flags.

Jeremy Alcoba sets pole record

Alcobe made the most of the brief window of opportunity to complete a clear lap: with a time of 1:31.259, the 23-year-old secured Kawasaki’s first pole position of the year. The front row is completed by Yamaha riders Arenas and Farioli. Masia secured the best Ducati result in fourth on the grid.

Ondrej Vostatek had a good Superpole, finishing seventh on the best-performing Triumph. ZX-Moto star Debise will start Saturday’s race from eighth on the third row.

Other positions: Corentin Perolari (21st/Honda), Raffaele De Rosa (22nd/QJ Motor), Andrea Giombini (29th/MV Agusta).

Cremona could turn out to be Dominique Aegerter’s best Supersport weekend yet on his Kawasaki. The 35-year-old finished twelfth, just 0.593 seconds behind his team-mate. Even Philipp Öttl (Ducati), in 17th, is just 0.9 seconds off the fastest time. Andreas Kofler qualified in last place.
