Supersport World Championship Cremona practice: Yamaha ahead of ZX Moto – spectacular Kofler crash!

Sunshine and 23 degrees greeted the 34 riders in the Supersport World Championship as they began practice in Cremona. Yamaha rider Albert Arenas travelled to Lombardy for the tenth of twelve rounds of the season as the clear championship leader. He held a 70-point lead over ZX-Moto rider Valentin Debise. If Debise is to turn the championship around, he will have to rely on Arenas slipping up.

At the start of the only free practice session on Friday morning, Can Öncü set the pace. The Turkish rider was the first to approach the 1:31 mark and topped the timesheets with a lap of 1:32.084 minutes. Shortly before the halfway point, Öncü crashed in the final corner and subsequently brought his slightly damaged Yamaha R9 back to the Ten Kate pit. His team-mate Aldi Mahendra had already crashed earlier.

Later, Yamaha rider Filippo Farioli took the lead with a lap of 1:32.014 minutes. At that point, Josh Whatley was the second-fastest Ducati rider behind Matteo Ferrari on the WRP machine. Whilst braking for Turn 2, the Briton’s front wheel slipped out from under him and he ended up in the gravel trap. After half an hour, Philipp Öttl was outside the top 15, but was less than a second off the fastest time.

Kawasaki rider Jeremy Alcoba took the lead six minutes before the end and set a new fastest time of 1:32.008 minutes. Shortly afterwards, the 1:32 mark was broken: Farioli completed a lap in 1:31.837 and reclaimed the top spot. Federico Caricasulo (ZX Moto) also managed a fast 1:31-minute time.

Two minutes before the end of the session, Andreas Kofler went off at high speed in Turn 1, wrecking his Yamaha R9 in the process. The Austrian was able to walk away from the scene of the crash unaided. Kofler’s crash prevented many riders from mounting a final push.

Farioli held on to the lead ahead of Caricasulo. Alcoba secured a top-three finish for Kawasaki. Alessandro Zaccone was the best-placed Ducati rider in fourth. Can Öncü slipped to fifth place after initially leading.

Valentin Debise finished the session in ninth place. World Championship leader Albert Arenas managed only eleventh place. Philipp Öttl came within 0.508 seconds of the fastest time and was recorded in 13th place.

It was a disappointing start for former world champion Dominique Aegerter, who was heavily overshadowed by his Kawasaki team-mate Jeremy Alcoba and finished in 21st place.

Supersport returnee Bahattin Sofuoglu finished the first day of testing with QJ Motor in 25th place.
