Cremona, Race 1: Jeremy Alcoba secures Kawasaki’s first win in three years!

On Friday, Kawasaki ace Jeremy Alcoba secured his first-ever Superpole pole position. The front row for the first race at the Cremona Circuit was completed by Yamaha riders Albert Arenas and Filippo Farioli.

Arenas leads the overall standings with a 70-point lead over Valentin Debise (ZX Moto), who was lining up in eighth on the grid. If the Spaniard has a lead of 101 points or more over the Frenchman on Sunday, he will be crowned world champion ahead of schedule.

Dominique Aegerter (Kawasaki) qualified in twelfth place – his second-best grid position this year after Assen. Josh Whatley (Ducati) had to watch from the sidelines because the Briton had caused Simon Jespersen’s (Ducati) crash at Magny-Cours. All riders from 14th on the grid therefore moved up one place – for Philipp Öttl (Ducati) this meant 16th place, and for Andi Kofler (Yamaha) 31st. The Austrian also benefited from penalties imposed on Yuki Okamoto (Yamaha) and Andrea Giombini (MV Agusta), who were relegated to the back of the grid.

The 20-lap race got underway on time at 2.00 pm. Under a cloudless sky, the thermometer read a late-summer 25 degrees Celsius. The first start was abandoned on lap 2 following a crash involving Magny-Cours winner Roberto Garcia (Yamaha) and Jespersen, as a large amount of gravel had been swept onto the track. Both riders were back on track for the second start, which was reduced to just 13 laps.

Arenas won the sprint to the first corner, entering it in the lead ahead of Farioli and Alcoba. In Turn 4, Oli Bayliss (Triumph) suffered a spectacular crash. Meanwhile, Federico Caricasulo (ZX Moto) skidded through the gravel.

After lap 1, Arenas was still in the lead, having pulled slightly clear of Alcoba and Farioli. Can Öncü (Yamaha), Debise and Jaume Masià followed within a second of each other. With a solid opening lap, Öttl was in 13th place. Aegerter was 16th and Kofler 28th.

With the fastest lap of the race in 1:31.987 minutes, Alcoba snatched the lead. The Kawasaki rider is looking for a new ride for 2027 and desperately needs good results. At the rear of the ZX-6R pack, however, Arenas, Öncü, Farioli and Debise refused to be shaken off. The rider in sixth place – Alessandro Zaccone (Ducati) – was already 2 seconds behind, though.

Whilst Debise set a new fastest lap of 1:31.842 mins, Öncü crashed out of the race on lap 5. Öttl battled for eighth place in a group, whilst Aegerter had improved to 14th position.

Alcoba led the race flawlessly and even pulled slightly clear of Arenas, Farioli and Debise. The young Spaniard has secured three podium finishes in the Supersport category so far, but has yet to claim a victory.

After eight laps, Zaccone and Lucas Mahias (Yamaha) had also crashed. Alcoba remained in the lead, whilst the chasing group was led by Tom Booth-Amos (5th/Triumph). Aegerter had overtaken Öttl (11th) and was in tenth place.

With three laps to go, Alcoba led by 0.6 seconds ahead of Farioli, Arenas and Debise. Booth-Amos (5th) was consistently faster than the leaders and was now just 0.8 seconds behind the leading quartet. Aegerter gained another place and, in ninth, was within striking distance of seventh.

Alcoba went into the final lap with a 0.4-second lead. The 23-year-old impressed with his composure and precise riding, without any wobbles or over-braking. Three years after Can Öncü’s victory at Mandalika in 2023, the Spaniard secured another Kawasaki win. Arenas secured second place. Farioli took third, claiming his first podium in the Supersport World Championship.

In front of more Chinese ZX Moto fans in the stands than ever before, Debise had to settle for fourth place. Triumph rider Booth-Amos finished fifth, whilst Matteo Ferrari brought the best-placed Ducati home in sixth.

Domi Aegerter crossed the finish line in ninth position – this is only the Swiss rider’s second single-digit finish with Kawasaki. Philipp Öttl came eleventh and Andi Kofler 24th.

Whilst Raffaele De Rosa scored two points for QJ Motor in 14th place, Honda came away empty-handed in the first race.
