Advantage Maria Herrera: After Misano, Beatriz Neila needs a helping hand

After two third-place finishes at the season opener in Portimão, Beatriz Neila has consistently crossed the finish line as either the winner or runner-up – a magnificent run of form! And yet, it seems to be just not quite enough in the battle for the world championship against Maria Herrera. The defending champion has been more consistent this year and has also finished on the podium in every race – winning five of them.

After two second-place finishes at Misano, both behind her compatriot, the usual smile had vanished from Beatriz Neila’s face. The fact that the races were decided by margins of just 0.125 and 0.075 seconds in favour of the 29-year-old weighed heavily on Neila.

“I love Misano; it’s one of my favourite circuits, which is why I was so keen to do well here,” emphasised the Ampito Crescent rider. “Both races were similar – it was a two-horse race between Maria and me. I gave it my all right to the end and I’m satisfied, but of course I would have liked to have won. We finished second, which gives the team some recognition for all their hard work this weekend.”

However, with a 24-point deficit, the fact remains: even if Neila were to win all four races at Donington Park and Jerez, second-place finishes would be enough for Herrera to successfully defend her title. At least one other rider would have to finish between the two title contenders.

“The situation has become more difficult, that’s true. But I won’t give up and will give it my all right up to the final race. ‘Anything can happen,’ says Neila defiantly. ‘The championship isn’t over; there are still four races to go. I’m proud of my performance.’
