In the sweltering summer heat, one highlight follows another in the Moto4 Northern Cup. Last weekend, the young riders competed once again as part of the MotoGP, this time at the Automotodrom Brno in Brno, Czech Republic. Robin Siegert once again won both races, but this weekend the competition was hot on his heels. Anina Urlaß managed to finish second in both races, whilst Jaylen Korporaal from the Netherlands and the Czech local hero Roman Durdis each secured third place.
Kiefer Racing rider Robin Siegert started both races from pole position after Anina Urlaß of the Mass Sports Racing by Jrp Motorsport team had set the fastest qualifying time but was relegated to the back of the grid due to a technical infringement. Leading from the front, Siegert drove a solid first race, building up a lead of over four seconds, until Urlaß almost caught him again towards the end of the race and crossed the line just 0.739 seconds behind.
Second Brno race was a nail-biter
Things got heated for the 15-year-old in the second race. Although he managed to lead for several kilometres over the course of the eleven laps, he had to fight hard against his pursuers, who kept trying to overtake him. In the final corner of the last lap, however, Siegert edged out Urlaß by 0.067 seconds to celebrate his sixth consecutive victory. “The Brno weekend with MotoGP was another perfect weekend for us. The team did a brilliant job. We can only build on this and improve on the small details,” said the 15-year-old. “In the first race, I managed to open up a small gap and then won. The second race was in a large group, where I was able to come out on top. The plan worked twice. I’m very happy! Thanks to everyone who was there in person and to those supporting me from home. It wouldn’t be possible without you.”
Anina Urlaß, who fought her way up from 22nd on the grid on both Saturday and Sunday, reports: “Neither race went quite as planned, as I had to start from the back of the grid. However, I was able to ride straight through the field to the front in both races. The first few laps were always a bit tricky, but I managed it, catching up with the leading group each time and then riding at the front from there. In the first race, I didn’t quite manage to catch up with Robin, but in the second race I was able to take the lead; however, I made a small mistake on the final lap and so couldn’t win. But I’m really happy with that, because starting from the back of the grid is quite a challenge. It was great fun.”
Successful even without a trophy
Having started from third on the grid in both races, Thias Wenzel was always close behind the leaders. In the first race, the Team Nsa driver finished in fourth place. In the second race on Sunday, he crossed the line in fifth place. Although this means he drops one place in the overall standings, the rider, who is sponsored by Motorsport Team Germany, remains in the top three.
Danny Hinkelmann had a strong race weekend. Starting from second on the grid, the Moto4 Northern Cup rookie from the Hinkelmann DH14 Racing Team finished sixth in the first race. In the second race, the 16-year-old even took the lead on the first lap, battled in the leading group throughout the race and ultimately crossed the finish line in sixth place once again.
Meanwhile, Motorsport Team Germany-sponsored rider Smilla Göttlich, starting from 11th place, picked up further points with 10th and 14th-place finishes. “All in all, the weekend in Brno was quite alright. I’d have hoped for more in the races, but I’ll take all the positives with me,” said the Team Freudenberg – Paligo Racing driver. “Unfortunately, in both races I lost too much ground to the leading group on the first lap, which cost me the chance of better results.”
Still room for improvement
Louis Wolff had secured fifth on the grid following a strong qualifying session, but then struggled against the competition throughout both races. The Kiefer Racing Team rider finished twelfth in the first race. In the second race, the 18-year-old unfortunately went off the track on the very first lap and had to rejoin the field at the very back. Although Wolff managed to finish the race, he had to settle for 22nd place.
Jason Rudolph had a mixed weekend. The driver, supported by Motorsport Team Germany, finished 16th in qualifying and went on to complete a solid first race in the same position. In the second race, the 16-year-old Racingteam Rudolph rider managed to improve by at least one position, thereby even taking a point home from the Czech Republic. Tudor Dedea finished 17th and 20th in the two races.
