Former MotoGP ace Alex Hofmann: Debut as ‘lead commentator’ in Brno

The MotoGP World Championship witnessed a top-class battle in the sweltering heat at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno, with Marc Marquez claiming victory. Anyone familiar with the cramped and sweltering TV booths on the start-finish straight at the Automotodrom Brno knows that the on-site commentators and experts also face challenging conditions.

This time, the commentary team at the Austrian private broadcaster ServusTV saw a first. For the first time, Alex Hofmann was appointed ‘lead commentator’ for a race weekend – a role usually filled by Christian Brugger and, on occasion, Philipp Krummholz. Alongside Hofmann in the commentary box was expert and Honda test rider Stefan Bradl. In the pit lane and on the starting grid, Nicole Oberhauser and Sandro Cortese provided the commentary.

The fact is: the reshuffle in the Servus commentary booth had been planned for some time. The reason: ServusTV, together with the public broadcaster ORF, also holds the Austrian rights to the Football World Cup and is therefore currently on the ground in North America with a full team. In addition, the match between Austria and world champions Argentina was also on the programme on Monday evening in Dallas.

“At the end of the day, the change is down to the World Cup,” Hofmann, who now lives in Spain, confirmed to SPEEDWEEK.com. “We then looked for solutions and decided it was better to reshuffle the team rather than bring in new staff. I’ve actually commentated on a race for Eurosport before. It wasn’t really anything complicated. It’s good to see something different for a change. It’s like further training.”

“I’m used to steering the conversation from my experience as a presenter. With a race, of course, it’s a bit more than just presenting, which often only lasts a few minutes,” Hofmann went on to explain. “A race weekend is quite a lot to take on as a commentator, and you really feel the strain on your voice much more. As a co-commentator, you’re usually more in the background and have to recognise the key moments. As a commentator, you simply have to gather much more information. ‘Holiday-Hof’ will be back on my radar when I’m back as co-commentator,” Hofmann chuckled. At Assen, the roles will be the same as they were in Brno. Hofmann announced: “From the Sachsenring onwards, we’ll have Bruggi back in the commentary box and Alina in the pits.”
