Aprilia dominated – even though the aero wing on Bezzecchi’s bike came off

After Ducati drew level with Aprilia at the last few MotoGP events, the prototypes from Noale are once again setting the pace in England. The performances of the riders on the RS-GP speak for themselves. In qualifying on both Friday and Saturday, all four riders finished within the top five.

In free practice, Marco Bezzecchi had surprised everyone with a fabulous time, finishing the session ahead of Raúl Fernández (Trackhouse). Behind Ducati rider Di Giannantonio came Jorge Martin and Ai Ogura. In the decisive qualifying session, it was once again a bike from the official factory team that set the pace at record speed.Jorge Martin secured the coveted pole position ahead of the Trackhouse duo, Di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi, who was riding whilst in pain.

The Aprilia riders’ fifteen-minute showcase ended with a curious scene. Factory rider Di Giannantonio, who had lost several large aerodynamic components from the rear of his RS-GP during his full-throttle lap, came across a lost ‘performance part’ on his cool-down lap. The rear wing had landed in the middle of the wide track and could therefore not be quickly recovered by the marshals.

Marco Bezzecchi realised during a stop for another test start: “That wing might be mine.” The Italian turned round to look at the rear and eventually went ahead with the start. Back in the pits, following the return of the fifth-fastest MotoGP rider, the team received a visit from the Technical Commission. The Commission places great emphasis on the secure fastening of all components, and a corresponding warning was issued to team manager Paolo Bonora.
