Aragon, FP2: Aprilia sets fastest time, a sign of life from Francesco Bagnaia!

Under sunny skies and a blue sky, the pit lane lights turned green at 10.10 am, signalling the start of the 30-minute FP2 session. For the 22 MotoGP riders, this was their final opportunity to fine-tune their set-ups ahead of the subsequent qualifying session. Marco Bezzecchi’s fastest time from Friday afternoon’s free practice session served as the benchmark. The Italian Aprilia works rider had completed a lap of the 5.077-kilometre circuit in 1:45.455.

The lap times in FP2 indicated that the focus was on race set-up. After ten minutes, Marco Bezzecchi led the standings with a lap time of 1:46.761. Behind him came Diogo Moreira on a Honda, ahead of two KTMs. Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder were a good two-tenths of a second off the pace.

The Ducati riders got off to a slow start in FP2: Marc Márquez was the highest-placed Ducati rider in sixth. There were problems for VR46: Fabio Di Giannantonio didn’t set his first time until halfway through the session. Former champion Francesco Bagnaia also struggled. The Italian spent much of FP2 outside the top 15.

With a fresh soft rear tyre, Alex Marquez moved up to second place on his Gresini Ducati eight minutes before the end of FP2. The runner-up in the world championship missed Bezzecchi’s time by just 0.030 seconds.

Five minutes before the end of the practice session, the timing monitor showed absolute sector best times set by Marc Marquez and Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse-Aprilia). Marquez took the lead on a fresh medium rear tyre. The clock stopped at 1:46.448 minutes. Fernández used a soft rear tyre and moved up to second place.

However, Bezzecchi managed to improve on this in his final attempt: the number 72 Aprilia crossed the finish line in 1:46.216 minutes and reclaimed the top spot. Encouraging news: Francesco Bagnaia moved into the top five, signalling that they have found some solutions to the problems.

FP2 ended with an Aprilia setting the fastest time. Bezzecchi was the fastest ahead of qualifying, 0.232 seconds ahead of Marc Marquez. Raul Fernandez, Pedro Acosta (KTM) and Francesco Bagnaia rounded off the top five. Behind them came two more Ducatis: Fabio Di Giannantonio and Alex Márquez. Diogo Moreira (LCR-Honda), Brad Binder (KTM) and Franco Morbidelli (VR46-Ducati) followed in positions 8 to 10.

It was a disappointing session for championship leader Jorge Martin (Aprilia), who could only manage twelfth place. The fastest Yamaha was in 16th place: Fabio Quartararo was 1.273 seconds off the pace. His team-mates Jack Miller and Toprak Razgatlioglu followed in 17th and 18th places.
