2027 Superbike World Championship calendar: Two new venues and a coup in Asia

The MotoGP calendar is modelled on that of Formula 1, whilst the Superbike World Championship follows the MotoGP calendar – clashes of dates are to be avoided where possible. The fact that these three racing series are united under the umbrella of the US group Liberty Media has little impact on WorldSBK, as the production-based World Superbike Championship plays only a minor role.

Ten venues for 2027 have long been confirmed, with multi-year contracts in place for these circuits. These are:

Liberty does not expect the series to continue in Hungary, even though there is a valid contract in place there too. Jerez will also no longer feature on the calendar. In order to continue hosting MotoGP, the circuit in the southernmost tip of Spain is required to refurbish its pit complex, for which a six-month renovation period is scheduled for 2027.

Two new venues must therefore be found, as the contracts with sponsors and TV broadcasters stipulate a minimum of twelve events. In recent months, there has been a flurry of activity behind the scenes, as both Liberty and the motorbike manufacturers are keen to have more overseas races.

Negotiations in Malaysia and the US prove fruitless

For a long time, it looked as though Malaysia and the US might return to the calendar. However, talks with the Sepang Circuit near the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, failed to yield a positive outcome. And whilst there is regular dialogue with Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama – a two-hour drive west of Atlanta – the Americans have not yet taken the final step towards signing a contract. As a pit complex still needs to be built there, the debut will not take place until 2028 at the earliest.

It has now been confirmed that Jerez will be replaced by Valencia, where races were already held from 2000 to 2010. And China is joining as the 12th round! “Now is the right time to go there; we need to capitalise on the momentum,” a senior SBK manager told SPEEDWEEK.com.

With Kove, QJ Motor and the new brand ZX Moto – which has enjoyed great success in the Supersport World Championship – three Chinese manufacturers are already represented in the SBK paddock, whilst CF Moto is working on joining the series in 2027.

Liberty is in the fortunate position that several circuit operators in China are interested in hosting the first SBK event in the Middle Kingdom – it remains to be seen who will be awarded the contract.

Representatives of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) have already visited the Ningbo circuit, owned by Geely Holding, on several occasions to identify the modifications required for homologation. The track is 4,015 metres long and currently holds FIA Grade 2 homologation. The only circuit in the country that would already meet all the requirements is the Shanghai International Circuit, which hosted the MotoGP four times between 2005 and 2008.

The 2027 season will kick off on the weekend of 19–21 February at Phillip Island in Australia. As China cannot be combined with Australia at this time of year due to winter, the event will be moved to the autumn and could even host the season finale in October.
