2027 Superbike World Championship regulations: Ducati is confident in its expertise

For months, manufacturers’ representatives discussed possible changes to the technical regulations of the Superbike World Championship at meetings of the MSMA (which stands for Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers Association) in order to ensure greater balance. As the currently dominant manufacturer, Ducati naturally saw no need to take action, particularly as it had only introduced a new homologation model of the V4R for 2026.

MSMA decisions must be unanimous so that they can subsequently be discussed and adopted by the Superbike Commission, which acts as the governing body. Representatives from the promoter Liberty (formerly Dorna) and the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) also have a say in these matters.

The Superbike Commission met during the Superbike World Championship at Donington Park, and on 31 July the far-reaching changes to the Superbike regulations were announced. From 2027 onwards, a maximum rev limit will supplement the current fuel flow restriction as a second balancing measure. Every two rounds, a manufacturer may be granted an increase or decrease of 500 rpm.

For Ducati, agreeing to this involved a compromise. On the one hand, they gave the green light to the maximum rev limit; on the other, they secured a postponement of the increase in engine capacity to 1,200 cc until 2030.

However, this hardly sounds like enthusiasm. “It’s still very early days, but it will certainly change things significantly, and the impact on the motorbike will be quite substantial,” grumbled Ducati’s technical coordinator, Marco Zambenedetti. “We’ll get back to work and try to find the best way to steer our development so that we can get the most out of our package. With the new rules, our performance will certainly drop, but I’m confident that my engineers will do a good job.”

For Zambenedetti, one thing is clear: the other manufacturers will struggle to catch up with Ducati. “We’ll see whether these changes help the other manufacturers close the gap. I think there’ll still be a certain gap between them and us – but it’s still early days. That will become clear early next year,” said the Ducati manager confidently. “The tyres are changing too, which is an important development. We have excellent engineers and a well-engineered motorbike. We’ll try to make the most of it, no matter what happens.”
