Jorge Martin outclassed Marc Marquez (5th): “It was all under control”

Jorge Martin (28) secured second place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Sunday afternoon, thereby delivering the perfect response in the World Championship battle against Marc Marquez, who finished only fifth. In the race, held in warm autumn weather, Martin had to concede the lead to his rampant compatriot Pedro Acosta (KTM) during the first third of the race. This time, there was simply no stopping the rider who had braked late and suffered bad luck in Saturday’s sprint race .

For the remainder of the race, Martin managed his lead over team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, who closed the gap once more in the closing stages. “I want to congratulate Pedro; he’s been fighting for this victory for the last two years,” explained the 2024 world champion after the 28-lap race.

Whilst Acosta was engulfed in a sea of celebration from the Red Bull KTM team in the Parc Fermé, Martin’s joy was equally justified: the Aprilia ace has regained the lead in the championship standings and now holds a twelve-point advantage over world champion Márquez ahead of the showdown in Japan. “I then immediately tried to manage my fuel. Everything was actually under control.” There are still seven race weekends left on the calendar.

Martin also admitted, however: “I wanted to put more pressure on him; I could have picked up a few more points. In the end, my rear tyre was completely shot.” For Martin, the only thing that matters is the duel against “MM93”, and that’s why he knows: “It was a brilliant weekend; we need to keep performing like this. I’m looking forward to carrying on like this!”

Incidentally, there is a possibility that Martin will undergo routine surgery in Spain next week before the team heads to Asia. After the races at Misano, the Aprilia star had complained of unexpected and very painful arm pump problems.
