Alex Lowes (5th) after the Bimota home race: “We were just as good as the others”

Cremona was Bimota’s home race. The circuit is around 250 km from the factory in Rimini. Naturally, numerous employees, partners and sponsors were in attendance over the race weekend to support the factory riders Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani.

Two sixth-place finishes and one fifth place for Alex Lowes were the best results for the small motorbike manufacturer, which has been enjoying a revival since its takeover by Kawasaki. Given the many competitive Ducati riders in the field, these results are impressive – only on Saturday was Garrett Gerloff (Kawasaki), in fifth place, the best rider on a different make.

In the first race, Lowes and Gerloff crossed the finish line 20 seconds behind triple winner Iker Lecuona (Ducati). The Bimota rider was even 13 seconds behind his twin brother Sam in third place. Too much of a gap, according to the fourth-placed rider in the World Championship. “I had a great battle with Garrett Gerloff,” said Lowes. “In the final laps, I tried to overtake him. We maintained the pace really well, and I felt that we were both riding well. It would have been risky to attempt an overtaking manoeuvre on the final lap. It’s a bitter pill to swallow to finish 20 seconds off the win, because we probably rode just as well as everyone else – if you look at our consistency.”

On Sunday, Lowes made a significant change to the chassis, which had a positive effect. “It felt really good in the cooler conditions of the Superpole race, so we stuck with it for the second race in the afternoon,” explained the Englishman. “It felt really good again, but the front end made me a bit nervous at times when the bike was sliding. Apart from that, we were quicker and also closer to the independent Ducatis, which was our aim. We can be really satisfied because we’ve made good progress, didn’t make any mistakes and enjoyed the final race in Cremona. The track here wasn’t easy, but there were lots of fans there, and it was a great weekend.”
