Although he was only 14th on Friday, Jake Dixon was extremely confident ahead of the Superbike event in Cremona, as a crash in the second practice session had prevented him from setting a faster lap time. However, when the Englishman crashed again right at the start of Superpole on Saturday and had to start the first race and the sprint race from 18th on the grid, it looked as though the weekend was over.

But far from it: the Honda rider truly rose to the occasion in the races and coaxed a performance out of the CBR1000RR-R that few would have thought possible. Two ninth-place finishes were the reward for his efforts. And because this moved him up nine places on the grid for the second race, he secured sixth place – by far his best finish of the year.

No wonder the 31-year-old was greeted with a round of applause from his team. “Brilliant, a truly outstanding result,” said Dixon, relieved. “On Saturday I said we had to find a way to get further up the grid, and luckily for me there were a few crashes in the Superpole race and I finished ninth. That was a much better starting position for the second main race, and I’m absolutely delighted with everything. After the crash on Friday and the crash in qualifying, to finish 9th, 9th and 6th in the races – I couldn’t have asked for more.”
