Yamaha is sending Roberto Garcia into the 2027 Supersport title race with GMT94

Roberto Garcia honed his skills in the European Moto2 Championship; winning the 2024 series is the greatest achievement of the 20-year-old’s career to date. When the Spaniard made his debut in the Supersport World Championship with the Yamaha GMT94 team at Misano in 2025, he impressed with his strong pace and several top-five finishes.

Although several retirements have marred the 20-year-old’s record this year, a third place at the Balaton Circuit and six further top-five finishes convinced Yamaha: Garcia has been awarded a works contract and will continue to compete in the middleweight class of the production-based World Championship with the French team in 2027.

Yamaha has high hopes for Garcia: “GMT94 Yamaha is one of the most experienced teams on the grid, and we are confident that Roberto can develop into a title contender in the Supersport class by 2027,” emphasised Road Racing Manager Niccolo Canepa.

Garcia is one of the few non-French riders to have settled in well with Christophe Guyot’s team. He expressly welcomes the fact that he will continue to work with GMT94. “I get on really well with the team, and staying with Yamaha is an incredible opportunity for me,” said the rider, who currently sits eighth in the World Championship standings. “The R9 is one of the strongest bikes. We’ve taken a big step forward this year, and I believe I can take another one towards the end of this season and next year. We’re not far off; we can compete at the front and, if we can do so more consistently, we can also fight for the championship.”

The team’s second rider this year is Lucas Mahias, who has been riding for GMT94 since 2024. The 37-year-old also secured a podium finish and a top-five result this year, but currently sits only 15th in the overall standings.
