Miguel Oliveira on his attitude: Otherwise, he can’t expect anything from BMW

With three third-place finishes, BMW works rider Miguel Oliveira had the Portuguese fans on their feet at the European opener of the Superbike World Championship in Portimão in March. Will he manage something similar at Estoril?

At his first home race in the Superbike World Championship, only the Aruba Ducati duo of Nicolo Bulega and Iker Lecuona were faster than Miguel Oliveira, who raced to third place three times on his BMW M1000RR, thrilling the large crowd in attendance. In total, over 82,000 fans attended the Autodromo do Algarve over the three days – only the 2008 debut saw a larger turnout.

“I don’t know how many tickets were sold in advance; I didn’t know that before Portimão either,” Oliveira told SPEEDWEEK.com during a meeting in Estoril. “I hope people come to watch the Superbike races – that’s my main aim. The paddock should be full, even if that makes things tough for me. Unfortunately, Estoril doesn’t have as many races on the calendar anymore; Portimão has a great deal of experience in organising events. I was a guest at Estoril a few years ago and really enjoyed it. That’s why I hope lots of people turn up.”

Oliveira praises the condition of the Circuito do Estoril

“It feels good to be back here,” emphasised the five-time MotoGP winner. “I haven’t raced at Estoril since 2012, but I have very fond memories of it, as this is the track where I grew up as a young rider. The track is in excellent condition. We were here for a day in August, which gave me a good feeling. I know it’s a home race and that everyone is really looking forward to watching the Superbike World Championship. It’ll be a bit chaotic, but at the same time I’m much more relaxed than I was in Portimão.”

Oliveira has had a difficult few months since his serious crash at Lake Balaton in early May, but he assured us that this has had no effect on his motivation. “My approach is always optimistic,” emphasised the 31-year-old. “I have to be like that; I’ve got my attitude under control. If I demand the best from BMW and the mechanics, I can’t expect them to deliver if I’m not giving it my all myself. My attitude is always just as positive – the result is a combination of everything.”
