Moto3, qualifying: David Almansa 1st – Leo Rammerstorfer crashes

Not all Moto3 riders will be able to take part in the race weekend at the Red Bull Ring. Cormac Buchanan suffered a broken right ankle in his crash at Aragon. It is currently unclear when the 20-year-old will be able to get back on his KTM. At Spielberg, Buchanan will be replaced by Marcos Uriarte for Team Boe Motorsports, as was the case at Misano.

David Munoz is making his comeback this weekend with the German Intact team. The Spaniard broke his hip in a crash during the Moto3 race in Hungary. He was battling for a podium place on the final lap. In the process, the front wheel of his KTM made contact with the rear wheel of Alvaro Carpe’s bike. Munoz crashed, taking rookie Brian Uriarte and Valentin Perrone down with him. In the process, Munoz was struck by the Argentine’s bike.

Munoz passed the medical test on Thursday in Spielberg. This meant he was able to take part in FP1 on Friday morning, where he finished 16th, just under two seconds off the pace. The fastest time in this session was set by his team-mate David Almansa in 1:40.595 mins. Championship leader Maximo Quiles (Aspar) finished second, with Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Honda) in third.

It is a special weekend for the Austrian Leo Rammerstorfer. The Sic58 rider is contesting his first home Grand Prix on the world stage at Spielberg.

FP1 will be followed on Friday by free practice in the Moto3 class. The aim here is to secure a direct place in Qualifying 2, which is reserved for the fastest 14 riders. The remaining riders must take part in Q1 on Saturday, from which the top four then advance to Q2.

At the start of free practice, it was autumnally cool at 15 degrees Celsius. The track temperature was just 18 degrees. The sky was overcast, but it was dry.

Alvaro Carpe (KTM Ajo) set the first notable fastest time of 1:41.363 mins. By way of comparison: the Moto3 lap record at Spielberg was set by Maximo Quiles in 2025 with a time of 1:39.639 mins.

Shortly afterwards, Brian Uriarte set a new fastest lap time of 1:40.758. Close behind him was David Almansa.

A little later, Quiles moved into second place. Almansa countered immediately and set a new fastest lap of 1:40.326. Quiles wasn’t about to let that stand and improved on it with a time of 1:40.250. This fastest lap didn’t last long either: Almansa clocked a time of 1:40.165.

The top five after five minutes: Almansa, Quiles, Bertelle, Brian Uriarte and Carpe. Shortly afterwards, Almansa completed a lap in 1:39.765 – just over a tenth of a second off the lap record.

Almansa and Quiles were once again the two fastest riders at Spielberg so far.

The order at the halfway point of the session: Almansa, Quiles, Danish, Brian Uriarte and Bertelle. Rammerstorfer was in 22nd place. A few minutes later, Yamanaka raced into the top five.

Ten minutes before the end, Quiles nearly went over the front wheel in Turn 3 – he just managed to avoid a crash.

Two minutes later, Rammerstorfer crashed in Turn 2. He managed to get his Honda back on its wheels and carry on. Shortly afterwards, Hakim Danish crashed in the same corner.

There was plenty of action on the track in the final laps. Matteo Bertelle crashed in Turn 3. Almansa set a new fastest lap of 1:39.668. Eddie O’Shea pulled off a spectacular save and was able to carry on.

Quiles tried everything to beat Almansa’s fastest time, but he couldn’t get any closer. Almansa finished the session in first place, 0.2 seconds ahead.
