Top Ducati rider Alex Márquez (4th): “The mistake is down to me”

Alex Marquez finished the MotoGP race at Silverstone in fourth place. The younger of the two Marquez brothers was, however, still the best-placed Ducati rider at the impressive Aprilia showcase at the ‘Home of British Motor Racing’. For Alex Marquez, though, it could have been even better. The World Championship runner-up surged past title contender Ai Ogura and his brother Marc right at the start, before setting off in pursuit of Pedro Acosta.

Alex Marquez was the only Ducati rider who could keep up with the Aprilia riders – but only for a spell during the 20-lap race. Shortly before the halfway point of the race, the 30-year-old had overtaken Aprilia works rider Marco Bezzecchi, before making a mistake that saw him drop back behind Acosta again. “I think we could have fought for second place today. But the mistake in Turn 1 after the manoeuvre against Bezzecchi cost us a lot of time. I was a bit too optimistic there; we made contact.”

“After that slip-up in Turn 1, I then also noticed the first loss of grip on the rear tyre. At that moment, the rear end felt a bit unsettled, but I just tried to stay calm; I could see I was faster than Pedro. With all that power, the bikes often just make strange movements. I managed to close the gap again. But then the loss of grip became quite noticeable. Unfortunately, I missed the braking point slightly during the battle with Marco – that’s down to me!”

Clever Marco Bezzecchi

Marquez also had words of praise for his rival Bezzecchi: “Marco seems to have played his cards well; he managed his rear tyre better over the last two laps. He was a bit smarter than us – he didn’t push the bike too hard either. I was never close enough to Marco before Turn 15. Starting from seventh on the grid also held us back. Apart from Raul, I think I could have kept up with the other Aprilia riders.”

Speaking about his advantages over his team-mates on the Silverstone circuit, the future Red Bull KTM rider said: “I think Silverstone is similar to Barcelona. I’m also quite good at conserving the rear tyre in the first few corners here. The faster the corners are, the better I can preserve the tyre. That’s always been my big advantage.”

After Round 12, the Gresini rider remains in 9th place with 106 points, behind Pecco Bagnaia – who crashed in England – and ahead of Luca Marini (Honda).
