Update from the team: Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) in hospital following crash

Shocking scenes at the TT Circuit in Assen! Aprilia factory rider Marco Bezzecchi crashed on the second lap of the MotoGP race in the Netherlands. At Turn 15, he lost control of his front wheel, skidded into the gravel trap and spun violently round and round several times. The good news: it was immediately reported that he was conscious.

Bezzecchi was taken to the medical centre and subsequently to hospital. His Aprilia factory team stated: “Following his crash at the Dutch Grand Prix, Marco Bezzecchi was immediately taken to the circuit’s medical centre, where he was thoroughly examined by medical staff, including MotoGP’s medical director, Dr Ángel Charte.”

Conscious, initial all-clear – but further investigations

The statement continued: “Initial clinical examinations confirmed that the rider is fully conscious and has normal mobility in all four limbs, with no immediate signs of serious neurological or systemic complications.” So, good news for now on the key points. However, Aprilia preferred to err on the side of caution.

Bezzecchi: Severe pain!

Aprilia continues: “However, due to severe pain resulting from the violent impact, the medical team has decided to transfer Bezzecchi to the University Medical Centre Groningen (Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen). This transfer will enable comprehensive imaging diagnostics and specialist examinations to be carried out in order to definitively rule out any underlying injuries and ensure a safe recovery.”

Further information on his condition and any potential injuries will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Almost an afterthought following the violent crash: with his retirement on lap two, Bezzecchi has now gone three GPs in a row without scoring any points. He retired in Hungary, was suspended in the Czech Republic – and now this crash in the Netherlands. The World Championship lead has gone to his team-mate Jorge Martin.
