Spielberg, warm-up: Bezzecchi leads, Acosta and Binder crash

It was only shortly before the start of the 10-minute warm-up that the cold mist had cleared from over the Red Bull Ring. Conditions were far from ideal, with track temperatures of just 15 degrees. All 22 riders took to the track.

As feared, yellow flags were soon waved. Brad Binder, the only KTM rider to have scored points in the Sprint, was thrown from his RC16 by a highside. Binder escaped without serious injury, but the bike was badly damaged.

Pedro Acosta remained unfazed. Saturday’s tragic hero set the fastest lap with a time of 1:30.7 minutes. Marc Marquez then took the lead, but as if it were a matter of course, Acosta was back on top just one lap later. With a time of 1:29.5, the Red Bull rider was over half a second faster than Marc Marquez.

In the final session, other KTM riders made the headlines in the warm-up. Pol Espargaro and Enea Bastianini were temporarily in 2nd and 4th place. But in the final laps of the short session, the order changed – as the Aprilia riders had also found their pace in the final session.

Marco Bezzecchi knocked Acosta off the top spot (1:29.337 min), Martin moved up to fourth, and Rauf Fernandez (Trackhouse) to sixth. In the final minute, the drama surrounding Acosta continued. Pedro Acosta, who had lost the sprint victory after a mistake in the gravel, set off on the RC16 once more. Acosta lost control of the bike in the fast Jochen Rindt corner. Acosta emerged unscathed, but this meant that both Red Bull KTM Factory Racing bikes were out of action just a few hours before the start of the Grand Prix.
